12/25/2023 0 Comments Travellers rest caerphilly reviews![]() Portion sizes were quite small and the meringue was rock hard (I felt like asking for a chisel in order to be able to cut into it!). The time lapse was bearable due to it being a nice atmosphere as mentioned at the start of this review plus we weren't in any particular rush, but if we'd have had to wait any longer, I think it may have been a slightly different review! The desserts were a bit of a let-down. 30 mins from ordering for our starters to arrive and nearly 45 mins between finishing our starters and the main courses arriving. The starters and main courses were really nice and decent-size portions but we did have to wait quite a while (approx. The staff were very polite and helpful, albeit we had the feeling they were a bit overstretched considering we only saw 2 waiters/waitresses - Darren and a young girl, covering what appeared to be the majority, if not all of the tables which were all taken, but they did so with a smile on their faces and were very efficient and professional. There was a really nice atmosphere which made us feel comfortable from the minute we were shown to our table. All I can say is the manager needs to go on a training course because his people skills are AWFUL.Pub was very very busy which was lovely to see considering it was early afternoon and the main lunchtime rush would have finished and the tea-time not yet started. Desserts were ordered but really £7.25 for one chocolate brownie and a crumble same price. He then said I will get my area manager ok? Area manager thank god apologised listened to our tale and immediately took all the food off the bill. The ‘manager’ came over and he didn’t offer any apology. Dinner finished waitress comes back asking did we enjoy. The only thing we ate was the roast potatoes. The waitress said any sauces we obviously said horseradish she said NO none left you can have mint sauce tho!!!!The huge carrots were raw the meat was fatty just awful gravy was a watery horrid stuff. NO chicken pie!!!!!! So one more roast then! Literally five minutes later the food was there. Immediately were we ready to order food? Yes two roast beef one child roast beef one cottage pie one chicken pie. Any fruit shoots? NO any black currant squash? NO! Pint of lemonade with lime cordial NO lime ok pint of orange squash and lemonade no lemonade just water then! Bottle of Merlot please… NO none left been packed up see!!!! I’ve got this red wine tho says the waitress it’s £3 more tho we took the wine losing the will to live. My husband ordered a bottle of Prosecco it was the last one, 2.15 in a Sunday?!?!My son daughter in law and two grandchildren arrived we were shown to our table. He then told us there was only a few beef dinners left so I asked could I reserve them, NO first come first served!!!!!!!!!!! I’m disabled so just getting out of the car is painful then we were asked to sit down on a very low chair and wait. I asked him why he hadn’t stated that when we booked his answer was it’s on social media I said I wasn’t looking on social media when the table was booked. Walked thro the door to be greeted with your table isn’t ready so I’ll let you know when it is THEN just to let you know we close at 4 today so there isn’t many things on the menu. My daughter in law booked Sunday lunch here today at 3pm, we arrived a little earlier before the rest of the family. Such a shame, hope area managers get to read this and refurbish staff attitudes not just the decor! ![]() The disregard for quality for customers, lack of freshly cooked food and attitude of the manager greeting us at the door has put us off returning. I feel that customers were used to clear leftover stock, when in fact they should not have opened, if food is fresh you’d know how many bookings you have to provide for and therefore waste would be minimal? Has made me question the freshness of this kitchen. ![]() ![]() Sorry, but I don’t use Facebook to check the website of the pub I’m going to just incase they have no food or drinks?! The food we received was most definitely microwaved - closing or not, customer service and experience shouldn’t be affected. I questioned the manager on arrival why I hadn’t been called as I had to put my number on the booking and he just said its on social media. I booked the table using the website, and nowhere on the website did it say the menu and bar would be significantly reduced. We visited on the day before closing for a refurbishment, and as other reviews have suggested it was awful. ![]()
